Titulaire d'une licence d'anglais, Dominique Lavanant commence par enseigner la langue en Bretagne. Mais peu attirée par l'école et par la vie religieuse (son arrière-grand-tante a fondé un couvent en Bretagne1), elle s'inscrit à Paris aux cours de théâtre de Tania Balachova et Andréas Voutsinas. Après quelques auditions, elle effectue ses débuts sur les planches en 1970 avec notamment Jarry sur la butte et Les Caprices de Marianne. En 1976, elle rencontre la jeune troupe du Splendid (Gérard Jugnot, Josiane Balasko, Thierry Lhermitte, Christian Clavier, Marie-Anne Chazel et Michel Blanc) et se joint à elle dans la pièce Amour, coquillages et crustacés
