His first independent work was for Amal Neerad's Big B as a cinematographer, which was considered as a technically path-breaking film in Indian Cinema. Later, he made his directorial debut with Chaappa Kurishu. The film received a different response, as it was a different film from the cliched mainstream Malayalam films
