The story takes place in the North Sea where fishermen are fighting a fierce battle for daily bread. The local inn is kept by Jens Willing and his wife. Among the guests is the fish dealer Søren Bak, who has long had his eye on the innkeeper's daughter, Birthe. But Birthe does not like Søren Bak, and instead wants the young fisherman, Tom.
