John Stuart, born John Alfred Louden Croall, was a Scottish actor, and a very popular leading man in British silent films in the 1920s. He appeared in two films directed by Alfred Hitchcock. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His first talkie Kitty was a successful production. His last role was in the movie Superman, as a Kryptonian elder. He is buried in Brompton Cemetery, London. His son Jonathan Croall is writing a book about the screen idols of the 1920s, including John Stuart. In a Guardian article 11 February 2012, "My dad, the silent film star", Jonathan Croall writes a tribute to his father, which offers much personal and professional background
